Mentorship in Action: How CCWORKS Builds Stronger Workplaces

For over a decade, Theresa Bradshaw, Clerical Supervisor with the Contra Costa County Employment and Human Services Department (EHSD), has seen how dedicated mentorship can transform lives.

Through her partnership with the CCWORKS Subsidized Employment Program, Bradshaw has mentored and supervised approximately 33 Work Experience Trainees (WEX), helping Contra Costa County residents re-enter the workforce with confidence.

A Collaborative Approach to Overcoming Barriers

Transitioning into full-time employment often comes with significant challenges, such as adjusting to professional workplace expectations and navigating logistical hurdles like reliable transportation and childcare.

To ensure trainees have the resources they need to succeed, Bradshaw collaborates closely with Social Services Employment Placement Counselors (EPCs), including on-site EPC Rene Tucker. Together, they create a supportive, structured environment focused on:

  • Skill Development: Building core administrative and operational capabilities.
  • Accountability: Establishing professional habits and routines.
  • Problem-Solving: Working through personal and logistical challenges in real-time.

Supporting participants through successful six- or twelve-month placements is incredibly rewarding for Bradshaw. She states, “I am especially proud of the eight individuals who chose to pursue permanent county employment and were ultimately hired. Some of them continue to work in the same County Department [that] I do today.”

While the success of participants ultimately comes from their own hard work and determination, the mentorship and structured support provided by CCWORKS enhances their skills and better prepares them for career success. Bradshaw adds, “It is gratifying to know that I played a small part in supporting their journey back into the workforce.”
